BVC Policies in Applied Research
Applied Research and Promotion of Innovation at Bow Valley College
Applied research activity informs our practice and strengthens innovation and technology transfer with the community and industry. Applied research is encouraged as an integral facet of the College. Research activities are undertaken when there is sufficient evidence that the research meets the following goals: (1) has a strong potential for practical learning experiences for adult learners, (2) enhance knowledge about innovation in the community, workplace and/or adult education, and/or (3) contributes to economic, cultural and social development.
Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Human Participants
This policy governs the conduct of research involving humans. Research involving human participants at Bow Valley College (the College) will at a minimum be conducted in accordance with the most current version of the Tri-Council Policy Statement for the Ethical Conduct of Research Involving Humans. Bow Valley Research Ethics Board (REB) and its associated committees govern the ethical conduct of research on human participants at the College. All research and research-related activity involving human participants conducted under the auspices of the College shall fall within the jurisdiction of the REB, irrespective of the source of financial support (if any) and irrespective of the location of the project. For clarity projects conducted by researchers from outside the Bow Valley College community who access College resources (equipment, personnel, or students) fall within the jurisdiction of the Bow Valley College REB.
Integrity in Research and Scholarship
Bow Valley College is committed to the highest standards of integrity in research and scholarship. Bow Valley College expects its staff and students will carry out research and scholarly work maintaining the highest ethical and scientific standards of academic integrity. Such integrity requires careful supervision of research, including that conducted by students; competent use of methods; adherence to ethical standards of discipline; and the refusal to engage in or condone instances of fraud or misconduct. The definitions, principles and guidelines included in this policy are intended to provide direction in the establishment of practices for maintenance of high standards of integrity in research and scholarship.
Applied Research and Innovation Communication Policy
Bow Valley College and Funders both benefit from positive public awareness of government-funded research and research training, and from promoting the value of this investment for Canadians. In order to maximize mutual benefit and fulfil responsibilities, the College and Funder collaborate and work closely together to inform the public about Funder grants and scholarships awarded programs of research support and research training, and about significant research results achieved at the College.
