Exam Accommodations
Bow Valley College Exam Accommodations
Under Human Rights Legislation and BVC's Academic Accommodations and Supports for Learners with Disabilities Policy, students are eligible to receive exam accommodations because of a disability. There are legal requirements for the provision of exam accommodations for the College, academic departments, CSS, and the student.
Students who have a diagnosed disability may be eligible for exam accommodations. Before writing any exams, students must register with the Counselling and Specialized Support (CSS) unit to determine their eligibility and the reasonable exam accommodations that are required and permitted.
Students requesting accommodations must meet with CSS every semester and have appropriate and up-to-date documentation from a professional specializing in the disability area. This documentation must state the specific academic accommodation(s) required and clearly indicate a direct link between the disability and the requested exam accommodation(s).
If CSS determines that a student is eligible for accommodations based on documentation of a disability, an Individual Accommodation Plan (IAP) will be provided to the student. This form outlines the allowed accommodations – CSS, the student, and the academic department instructors and coordinators must sign this form. Accommodations cannot by waived or changed by the academic department without consultation with CSS. Exam accommodations will not be provided until CSS receives a signed IAP.
Student Responsibilities:
- Provide CSS with the necessary documentation indicating a disability and specific accommodations recommended.
- Meet with CSS to determine appropriate accommodations based on the documentation.
- Meet with Exam Accommodation Administrator in CSS to fill out the IAP each semester.
- Take the IAP to the department and have instructors and coordinator sign the IAP form.
- Return the signed IAP to CSS to activate any accommodations.
- Remind instructor of the accommodations required and ensure that the appropriate accommodations are recorded on your testslip.
- Let the instructor know where you will be writing their exam.
- Know what accommodations have been approved by CSS and request only the approved accommodations for each exam.
- Apply for exam accommodations each semester to ensure accommodations are still appropriate and effective.
Accommodations for Non-Bow Valley College Exams:
If you have a documented disability and think you may qualify for accomodations for the GED or Alberta Diploma Exams, please contact CSS as soon as possible to register for accommodations.
