How Do I use the Equipment in the Classroooms?

Getting onto the Classroom Computer

One of the first things you may notice is that the login information you have for your College e-mail and network access doesn't work in the classroom!  The College operates 2 different networks - Administration - accessible to staff only & Education-(accessible to students, staff and other users at the College.

The password for accessing the computers in the classrooms & labs is fireup.

Accessing my Files in the Classroom or through BVC wireless internet

The Education network is available in the classrooms, the Library & Learning Commons and through the wireless internet connections.  As a result, you cannot access the resources you created and saved on your P:/ drive (on the Admin. network) when you enter the classroom.

Tips:

  • Carry your resources on a flashdrive so you can access them in the classrooms
  • Email the files you need to yourself and access them via your College webmail
  • Save the files "in the cloud" so you can access them anytime, anywhere - including home and the classroom
  • Upload the files to a Blackboard shell /course - you can determine access by using specific Blackboard tools (hide/show).

The Data Projector

There is a remote control in each room associated with the data projector.  Some instructors never use more than the on / off buttons, but there are a few other very useful ones described below.

Freeze

The freeze button (found in the lower right hand corner of the remote)  freezes the picture displayed on the projection screen, but allows the instructor to move to another page on the instructor workstation.
  • Useful if you are showing a PPT slide and want to cue a video or a website on the instructor station without the audience seeing it yet.

  • Useful if the instructor wants to explore the internet or files to incorporate an additional perspective or resource spontaneously into class and can't mute the picture because the audience is still viewing it

Pic Mute

The picture mute button (found just below and between the Power on and off buttons) mutes the picture on the screen without turning the projector off.  This comes in quite handy if you are not finished using the projector, but wish to focus on another activity.  Using the picture mute button can save time as turning the machine off and on requires more time than muting the picture.

Magnify

There are zoom in / zoom out buttons so you can make the text displayed on the screen larger and easier to read from the back of the room.

Slide Advance

Some rooms with remotes also have a "thingamajig" sticking out of the monitor.  The "thingamajig" is the receiver paired with the remote that allows the remote to also function as a presentation remote by using the r-click and l-click mouse buttons (found near the middle of the remote).  A presentation remote allows the presenter to move about the classroom and advance slides as needed.
