CAREERS IN ADMINISTRATION
MEDICAL OFFICE ASSISTANT CERTIFICATE
This two semester (24 week) full-time program prepares you to
manage the flow of electronic and paper-based information in a medical
office setting. Over 95% of BVC Medical Office Assistant graduates find
employment in medical offices and clinics,
hospitals, health and chiropractic centres, insurance agencies, and
private businesses.

CHECKLIST
Admission Requirements:
Refer to Admissions Procedures for Full-Time Programs on page 8 for
further clarification.
• Credit in either English 20-1 or 20-2 or equivalent
• 2 additional Grade 11 subjects (excluding the 26-levels)
OR:
• Successful completion of the General Equivalency Development test (GED)
with a standard score of 450 in Language Arts: Reading and Writing
OR:
• Satisfactory results on the BVC Admissions Test
Pre-Program Requirements
The criteria listed below must be completed prior to the first day of
classes:
• A current valid immunization report
• Current Police Information Check (PIC)
Note: Students who have not submitted their documents by the start of
the
program will have their Letter of Admission withdrawn.
• SFA/CPR Level C Basic Rescuer Certificate taken within 6 months
prior to work experience
International Applicants or Applicants Educated Outside of Canada
English language proficiency can be demonstrated by any one of:
• Achievement of a TOEFL score of 527 – 530 on the paper-based test, a
score of 197 on the computer-based test, or a score of 71 on the
internet-based test (iBT)
• Achieving an IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
score of 5.5
• Successful completion of the English for Academic Purposes 3 (EAP 3)
program at Bow Valley College with a grade of B
• Obtain satisfactory results on the BVC Admissions Test

Medical Terminology

Learn how to read and interpret
commonly used medical terms, symbols and abbreviations. This course
covers rules, prefixes, suffixes, roots, combining forms, and how to
apply them.
Medical Terminology

This course continues instruction in language of medical terminology and
integrates word components into exploring body systems, pathological
conditions, lab and diagnostic procedures, and medications/drug
classification.

Keyboarding and Document Processing for Health Care Administration

This course combines keyboarding for speed and accuracy with
Microsoft computer applications required by health administrative assistants.
For successful course completion, a keyboarding speed of 35 wpm is required.

Introduction to the Medical Office

Examine the organizational structure of a medical office, the
importance of office policies and procedures, medical law, ethics and
safety in a health setting.

Basic Medical Office Skills

Learn and apply medical administrative skills, including
appropriate telephone communication, health record filing and
documentation, appointment scheduling and inventory management.

Financial Management and Billing

Provides an opportunity to learn and apply the skills of
completing financial transactions for the medical office. Includes
basic banking and collection procedures, and processing Alberta
Health and third-party health claims for reimbursement.

Introduction to Medical Transcription

Provides instruction and practice in transcribing medical
reports using current transcription equipment. A basic introduction
is given on transcription guidelines, editing and formatting of
reports.

Clinical Skills for the Medical Office

Learn to take vital signs, prepare and sterilize
articles, perform simple diagnostic testing and other initial
patient screening skills.

Business
Communications for Health Care Administration

This course provides an introduction to the importance of
correct business English for the workplace, including proofreading,
spelling, grammar, number-style and practice of basic writing
techniques and communication skills.

Career Preparation

Develop skills in researching job opportunities in the
health field, preparing targeted resumes and how to be successful in
a job interview.

Work Experience
l
^top
A four-week work experience, under the direct guidance of
a workplace preceptor, provides hands-on practice in a medical
office or clinic. Weekly contact with the Bow Valley College
instructor is provided.
