Online Certificate

Bow Valley College’s Office Administration Certificate is now available online through eCampusAlberta. Study from home using your own internet service provider to access courses from Bow Valley College, Keyano College, Lethbridge College, SAIT, NorQuest College, Red Deer College, Olds College, and Grande Prairie Regional College. You may work at home using your own internet service provider. You are given an internet address and password to access the course material. These courses offer the flexibility to study at home. As you work through a course, your instructor will be available to answer any questions, explain concepts, and provide continuous support and feedback through email, fax, or phone.

Admission Requirements l ^top

Refer to Admissions Procedures for Full-Time Programs on page 8 for further clarification.

• Credit in English 30-1 or 30-2 or equivalent
• Credit in Grade 10 Math (excluding the 14 & 16 levels)
OR:
• Successful completion of the General Equivalency Development test (GED) with a standard score of 520 in Language Arts: Reading and Writing and 450 in Math
OR:
• Satisfactory results on the BVC Admissions Test

Additional Admission Requirements

• Minimum keyboarding speed of 25 wpm is strongly recommended
• PC with Offi ce 2003
• Reliable internet connection

Once accepted into the program, students will be notifi ed to complete
an online WebCT orientation course.

International Applicants or Applicants Educated Outside of Canada

English language proficiency can be demonstrated by any one of:

• Achievement of a TOEFL score of 527 – 530 on the paper-based test, a score of 197 on the computer-based test, or a score of 71 on the internet-based test (iBT)
• Achieving an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 5.5
• Successful completion of the English for Academic Purposes 3 (EAP 3) program at Bow Valley College with a grade of B
• Obtain satisfactory results on the BVC Admissions Test

Math requirement can be demonstrated by one of the following:

• Obtain satisfactory results on the BVC Admissions Test
• English transcripts showing equivalent level Math completion.

Learn to schedule appointments, use proper telephone techniques, coordinate business conferences, handle procedures for travel arrangements, prepare rιsumιs and portfolios, learn procedures for incoming and outgoing mail and email, and gain an understanding of time management.


Keyboarding I CMPT 072 (Red Deer College)  l ^top
Prerequisite
: OA 110
Key straight-copy alphabetic material using proper touch techniques at a minimum of 20 nwpm. Effectively proofread documents.


Word Processing I CMPT 083 (Red Deer College)  l ^top
Prerequisite
: CMPT 072
Learn word-wrap, editing, formatting, and correcting features. Report production following a style guide which includes a title page, reference page, header, page numbering.


Keyboarding II CMPT 073 (Red Deer College)  l ^top
Prerequisite
: CMPT 083
Key straight-copy alphabetic material using proper touch techniques at a minimum of 35 wpm. Learn to effectively proofread documents.

Manage multiple page document production; enhance the visual display of text; efficient document production through mail merge, macros and templates.


Document Processing VA 100 (Red Deer College)  l ^top

Using Microsoft Word 2003 and MicroPacePro, emphasis will be on building keyboarding speed and accuracy and on the production of mailable correspondence (including merge), tabulated and tabled material, and basic reports, tables and itineraries.


Business Communications I OA 120 (Keyano College)  l ^top
Learn the importance of correct and current business English as well as other communication essentials for the office environment. Improve your proofreading, spelling, grammar, and number-style skills and explore Web resources for business communications.


Communication Skills VA 110 (Red Deer College)  l ^top
This course provides an introduction to various types of communication skills important for virtual assistants. The course covers such topics as grammar, business writing, listening skills, communication technology, informal research skills, and public speaking.


Interpersonal and Organizational Skills COMM 152 (Bow Valley College)   l ^top
This course prepares you for entry into the contemporary Canadian office setting. Learn what to expect from a career as an administrative professional and how to conduct yourself with your co-workers and clients. Manual filing is also covered.


Windows and File Management OA 110 (Keyano College)  l ^top
This is an introductory course to the Windows 2000 platform and to electronic file management. This introductory course is designed for students who have limited or no previous computer experience. Students will learn the basic functions of a computer system, hardware and software components, and basic internet features. This course provides a foundation for students to learn subsequent computer courses, including Windows applications.


Microsoft Word Specialist OSWD 100 (Keyano College)   l ^top

Gain hands-on instruction of the concepts and functions of Microsoft Word. Complete this course to prepare for the Word Specialist Level testing in Microsoft’s Office Specialist Certificate.


Introduction to the Internet BCPT 199 (SAIT)  l ^top

Employing Microsoft internet Explorer, develop useful internet skills essential to succeed in your post-secondary studies and chosen career. A working knowledge of Microsoft Windows is required prior to enrolling in this course.


Microsoft Outlook (NorQuest College)  l ^top
Prerequisite:
OA 110
Develop the skills necessary to manage/schedule appointments and meetings, keep track of activities, prepare task lists, organize and maintain contact lists, use Outlook to communicate and collaborate across networks.


Microsoft Excel Introductory/Intermediate (NorQuest College)  l ^top
Prerequisite:
OA 110
Learn the fundamentals of working with spreadsheets using MS Excel. Learn how to organize, design, and edit worksheets. Develop skills in basic computations and in calculating percentages, mark-ups, and simple/compound interest and other business applications.


Microsoft PowerPoint (Olds College)  l ^top
Prerequisite: OA 110, CMPT 083
Learn to create a presentation using a design template and auto layouts, to use outline view and clip art to create a slide show, and to create a presentation on the Web.


Access – Core OA 180A (Grande Prairie Regional College)  l ^top
This course deals with the management of information in business. Learn to design and manage electronic filing systems for various office environments. Records management using the Microsoft Access database software is introduced.


Employment Preparation and Job Search BUSN 1006(NorQuest College)  l ^top
Complete a self-assessment of your skills and abilities. Learn how to research job opportunities, write impressive resume and cover letter, and develop effective job interview techniques.


Work Experience for Office Administration (Individual Institutions)  l ^top
