Health Care Interpreter Certificate (190 Hours)  l ^top

This program is designed for fluently bilingual adults who wish to work as interpreters in a health-care setting, including hospitals, clinics and other health-care agencies. The program provides occupational training in a classroom setting and in health-care settings through a practicum component. Graduates of this program have the skills required to work as interpreters in the health-care system in Calgary. Instruction is offered through classroom instruction, simulated health-care situations, interpretation practice in small language-specific classes and a practicum in a health-care setting.

Admissions requirements:
• University education recommended
• Excellent oral and written knowledge of English and one other language
• Aptitude for interpreting
• Successful completion of the language proficiency test

Medical Terminology I – In Class or Online (30 Hours)  l ^top

Fee: $295.00 (plus learning materials)

This course offers instruction in the language of medical terminology and teaches how to read and interpret commonly used medical terms, symbols and abbreviations. Medical Terminology I covers rules, prefixes, suffixes, roots, combining forms, and basic introduction to body systems. This course is recommended for those who are able to commit to home/self study in addition to classroom learning.

Introduction to Health Care Infrastructure (15 Hours)  l ^top

Fee: $195.00
 
This course will provide an exploration into the infrastructure of the health-care system as it pertains to interpretation. Also examined is the implication of culture for an individual’s perspective and attitude towards being a recipient of health care.

Prerequisite:
· Medical Terminology I

Pre-Interpreting Skills (30 Hours)  l ^top

Fee: $295.00

This course is designed to develop oral/aural skills, memory, language transfer skills, and terminology research in preparation for bilingual interpreting.

Prerequisite:
· Introduction to Health Care Infrastructure

Introduction to Interpreting (15 Hours)  l ^top

Fee: $195.00

This course describes the role of interpreters in relation to the institutions, agencies, organizations, professionals and individuals with whom they work. It describes the settings in which interpreters are needed, and indicates the language and interpreting skills that interpreters need in order to carry out the role successfully. Finally, it introduces the legal and ethical considerations relating to the work of the interpreter.

Bilingual Interpreting for Health Care (60 Hours)  l ^top

Fee: $795.00

This course consists of activities to develop skills in sight translation and consecutive interpreting using role plays and realism in a health-care context. Bilingual interpreting practice is included.

Health Care Interpreter Practicum (30 Hours)  l ^top

The practicum provides opportunities to conduct research, further develop skills and gain experience in a health-care setting. Learners receive hands-on experience that enables them to practice the skills they have mastered in the classroom.

· Bilingual Interpreting for Health Care
