Planning Special Events Certificate (145 Hours)   l ^top

Special events planning is an exciting and high-energy business that is growing quickly in Alberta. People who work in this field are responsible for the planning, organizing, managing, promotion and evaluation of special events such as festivals, conventions and trade shows. This industry appeals to creative individuals who have excellent interpersonal skills and a high regard for detail.

Introduction to Special Events (30 Hours)

This course introduces the foundations of events management, including event development, career options in event management, event budgets and event administration. Learn about determining a client’s motivation for an event and fitting the event to their goals and objectives, developing event timelines, and the rules, regulations, and standards involved in special events.

Organizing and Funding an Event (30 Hours) l ^top

Fees: $235.00 (plus textbook)

Explore media marketing for special events, event sponsorship, staff requirements for an event, event organization and post-event analysis. Learn to design a basic marketing plan, draft a sponsorship proposal, anticipate event organization needs, create an event critical path, and analyze all aspects of the event and relate them back to event objectives.

Special Event Logistics (30 Hours)  l ^top

Fees: $235.00 (plus textbook)

This course covers the details that an event manager deals with – from event location to on-site communications. Learn about food and beverage logistics, accommodations and transportation for guests, creating an on-site communications plan, the impact of audio, visual and entertainment decisions, and the activities required to close an event.

Legal and Ethical Considerations of Special Events (15 Hours)

Look at the legal and ethical issues involved in hosting an event. Learn how event negotiations should be conducted and the importance of obtaining the proper licences, permits and insurance for events.

Promoting an Event (30 Hours)  l ^top

Fees: $235.00 (plus textbook)

This course discusses pricing your event, developing a detailed marketing strategy, using the media to promote your event, rewarding participants and volunteers, and responding effectively through crisis communications. Learn how to work with the media to help with fundraising for your event.

Planning an Event – Final Project (10 Hours)  l ^top

Fees: $165.00

Apply the knowledge you learned in the five previous courses to develop an actual event plan. The key components of event planning are reviewed, and an overview of the process of creating an event plan is discussed. The development of the final project requires out-of-class time.

Prerequisite:
• Must have completed the five previous courses in order to take this course
