ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)

Language Skills Programs

Registration for part-time ESL courses is accepted up to one week after start date.

Basic ESL

This basic-level course improves your ability to speak, read, and write
in English.

Learn to:
• provide basic personal information in oral and written form
• respond with short answers to everyday situations
• follow short written instructions
• fill out simple forms

Grammar and Writing

This intermediate-level course improves your writing and grammar skills.

In this course:

• learn simple tenses, adjectives, spelling rules, and parts of speech
• understand the basics of writing good sentences
• develop awareness of paragraph forms
• improve accuracy and fluency in your writing
• build your writing vocabulary

Listening and Speaking

This intermediate to advanced course improves your listening and
speaking skills.

In this course:

• learn and implement listening techniques;
• practice English for everyday use through group work and role-playing;
• receive ongoing error correction in grammar, structure, and pronunciation;
• distinguish between formal and informal English; and,
• recognize and practice idioms in common use

Note: The Mon. & Wed. morning classes are high intermediate only.

Pronunciation

This intermediate to advanced level pronunciation course introduces
you to strategies and techniques to improve your spoken English.
Pronunciation is a computer-assisted course and is offered in 2 cycles.
There is no prerequisite for either cycle.

In Cycle A, you:

• compare and contrast the production of vowel sounds; and,
• compare and contrast the production of consonant sounds

In Cycle B, you:

• learn correct word and sentence stress;
• practice intonation and rhythm patterns; and
• focus on improving listening skills

Cycle A is not a requirement for Cycle B.

Speaking Professionally

This is an advanced-level ESL class focusing on the language
of business.

In this course, focus on the following areas of language as they relate
to the workplace:

• presentations
• meetings
• networking
• small talk
• idioms
• cultural differences

Course work includes text-based testing and an oral presentation.

Grammar

Learn where you are making grammatical mistakes and apply the rules
of grammar to communicate effectively. There is an assessment at the
first class. It is recommended you complete the intermediate level before registering for the advanced level.

In the intermediate level learn:

• simple tenses
• adjectives
• spelling rules
• parts of speech
In the advanced level learn:
• perfect tenses
• conditionals
• phrasal verbs/action words
• gerunds/infinitives

This intermediate-level ESL course will develop and improve learners’
writing and reading skills. In this course:

• build on your vocabulary each lesson through interactive activities
• discover strategies for better reading
• understand the basics of writing good sentences
• compose different types of paragraphs
• keep a weekly journal

TOEFL Preparation

This course prepares you, through classroom and computer-assisted
learning, to take the new “Next Generation Internet-Based Test.”

In this course, you:

• become familiar with computer-based testing; and
• focus on improving TOEFL-specific speaking, writing, listening,
reading, and structure skills.
