ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)
 
Corporate Readiness Training Program

Are you a skilled professional immigrant with no Canadian work experience?

This full-time program assists skilled, foreign-trained professionals to:

• learn the strategies to successfully find a job
• have an opportunity to earn a Canadian work experience
reference using the qualifications and experience gained in their countries of origin
• improve their English language skills for the Canadian workplace

Program Description

This full-time program takes place on Monday to Friday with each day
beginning at 8:00 a.m. The program provides:

• ten weeks of intensive business language, culture, and skills
training with a focus on the Workplace Essential Skills a foreign
trained professional will need to be successful in the Calgary
Corporate workplace
• six weeks of unpaid work experience (dependant on company acceptance)
• job search client support for six months after completion of
the program

Over 90% of graduates in the Corporate Readiness Training Program are employed in their field.

Costs: Government funding and Scholarships from TRICO Homes are
available for eligible applicants. Applicants who are in need of funding
must be aware that the process to apply will take up to 2 months.

• completed application package mailed to College or submitted at
information session (see page 8 for details)
• have Canadian Language Benchmarks of 6 – 8

Additional Admission Requirements

• be legally entitled (e.g. Canadian citizen, Landed Immigrant)
to work and train in Canada
• reside in Canada for 10 years or less
• require Canadian/Alberta work experience to enter your
occupational field
• require English training to secure employment
• have work experience in the country of origin and desire to enter
that occupational field in Canada

Applicants can be:
• receiving Employment Insurance (EI);
• receiving Alberta Works Income Support (IS) benefits; and/or
• eligible for EI Reachback

Program Content

During the program participants will learn to;

• Write an effective professional cover letter and rιsumι
• Successfully Interview for a job
• Work as a member of a team to complete various projects
• Network to find job leads, meet people and further their career
• Better understand Calgary’s corporate culture
• Present to colleagues and clients effectively
• Understand the importance of volunteerism in Calgary
• Communicate with colleagues and clients formally and informally
• Understand and use a variety of Canadian expressions and idioms
• Set short and long term career goals
• Conduct and participate in business meetings
• Multitask in a stressful environment; meet deadlines and manage
time effectively
• Research the labour market for future opportunities
• Evaluate and improve their Workplace Essential Skills using the
TOWES (Test of Workplace Essential Skills)
• Evaluate their computer skills through CBSA testing
• Improve their English language skills in reading, writing, listening,
and speaking

Work Experience Placement

During the work experience component of the program (weeks 11-16),
participants have the opportunity to be placed with a host company that takes advantage of their education and work history from their country of origin. Participants are not paid for this placement, but are able to include this experience on their rιsumιs as Canadian Experience. The hours worked in this unpaid position depend on the host company’s normal work hours.

Fees & Dates

Date: Jan. 6, 2009, May 4, 2009

Tuition: $7,950, plus non-refundable fees

Application Fee: $40

Program Schedule:

Weeks 1 – 10: 8:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. (Mon. – Fri.)
Weeks 11 – 16: According to host company’s normal hours
