Behaviour Support Diploma

The Behaviour Support Diploma Program builds on the knowledge and skills you developed in the Education/Teacher Assistant certificate program (see page 66 for more information). This additional year of study focuses on the development of knowledge and skills to work with children and youth with
behavioural challenges.

Graduates of the Behaviour Support Diploma have the knowledge and skills to work in education/community settings with individuals who exhibit emotional and/or behavioural challenges requiring support.

Enhance and strengthen your skills for success for college and career. Emphasis is on personal management, study skills, and critical thinking.



Collaborative Practices
  l ^top
Explore the principles of leadership and teamwork including decision making, problem solving, conflict resolution, advocacy, and lifelong development.
 


Professional Practices
  l ^top
This course addresses ethical and professional practices in human services, such as personal and professional boundaries, self care, stress management, and the role of life-long learning.
 


Trends and Issues in Human Services
  l ^top
Study human services from a historical perspective. Examine trends, values, and issues associated with support for individuals with disabilities, and family functioning dynamics.
 


Family and Society Studies
  l ^top
This course addresses cultural competency as well as family functioning, parenting and learning from families. Family issues such as violence, neglect, and abandonment are explored.
 


Therapeutic Communication
  l ^top
This course focuses on specific aspects of effective communication practices and the development of cultural sensitivity and competence. 
 


Individualized Program Planning
  l ^top
Prerequisite: EACP 160 Introduction to Exceptionalities or equivalent.
This course examines the principles of program plan development, including skills in observation, data collection, goal setting and report writing.
 


Support Strategies I
 l ^top
This course focuses on the skills needed to build relationships and address student engagement and explore strategies for prevention, negotiation, improving self-esteem, and positive reinforcement.
 


Support Strategies II
  l ^top
This course focuses on proactive and reactive intervention strategies including anger management, conflict resolution, problem solving, social skill development and de-escalation.
 


Specialized Interventions
  l ^top
This course examines special topics associated with behaviour issues such as safe restraints, suicide prevention, substance abuse and assistive technology.
 


Developing Resiliency
  l ^top
This course focuses on the concept of resiliency in children, families, and communities. Factors that contribute to resiliency and factors that limit resiliency are examined.
 


Working with Atypical Behaviours
  l ^top
Examine the functions of behaviour as well as specific types of disorders/disabilities related to aggression, hyperactivity, social problems and mental illnesses, and behaviour diagnoses.
 


Practicum I
 l ^top
Concepts and skills learned in the classroom are applied in community settings through placement with educational/community service agencies.
 


Practicum II
 l ^top
Prerequisite is Practicum I or departmental approval.
 


Practicum III
 l ^top
Prerequisite is Practicum II or departmental approval.
 

Introduction to e-Portfolio  l ^top
This course introduces you to e-portfolio philosophy and software. Create and maintain an e-portfolio that emphasizes your personal, educational, and career goals.


Career Skills Evaluation  l ^top
This final course in the college success series helps you assess your employment skills and design a professional development plan as you prepare to transition from college to the workplace.
