CAREERS IN HUMAN SERVICES


Early Learning and Child Care Certificate – Integrated

Do you want to work with children, but need to improve your English? This program is a combination of English as a Second Language (or high school level English), theory in child development, communication, and programming with practical applications of knowledge and skills. Graduates are able to provide quality childcare to young children in various settings
and be eligible for Level 2 Child Care Worker certification. One hundred per cent of graduates of this program find work in their field.

Admission Requirements

Refer to Admissions Procedures for Full-Time Programs on page 8 for further clarification.

• Credit in either English 10-1 or 10-2 or equivalent
OR:
• Successful completion of the General Equivalency Development test (GED) with a standard score of 450 in Language Arts:
Reading and Writing
OR:
• Satisfactory results on the BVC Admissions Test

Pre-Program Requirements

The criteria listed below must be completed prior to the first day
of classes:

• Current Police Information Check (PIC) with vulnerable sector search

Note: Students who have not submitted their documents by the start of the program will have their Letter of Admission withdrawn.

Graduates of this program may be accepted into:

• Bow Valley College – Early Learning and Child Care Diploma Year 2
• Grand Prairie Regional College - Early Learning and Child Care Year 2
• Mount Royal College – Early Learning and Child Care Diploma Year 2
• Lakeland College – Early Learning and Child Care Diploma Year 2
• Medicine Hat College – Early Learning and Child Care Diploma Year 2

Program length: Three semesters plus one month

Fees: Tuition for this program is determined in negotiation with Alberta Human Resources and Employment (AHR&E).

College Success Skills  l ^top
Enhance and strengthen your skills for success for college and career. Emphasis is on personal management, study skills, and critical thinking.



English 10-2
  l ^top
This course prepares students for English 20-2. It incorporates the six language arts of reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing and representation.
 


English 20-2
  l ^top
English 20-2 is designed to provide students with functional English skills. Literature and practical English skills that students need to help them in the workforce will be studied. There is also an emphasis on improving reading and writing skills.
 


English 30-2
  l ^top
English 30-2 incorporates the six language arts (reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing and representation) in preparation for the requirements of the English 30-2 diploma examination.

OR:

English as a Second Language for Careers: Early Childhood Education
This program meets your the needs if you wish to study at the post-secondary level, or enter a Canadian work environment.
 


First Aid and CPR Level C
  l ^top
This course provides instruction and practice in the first-aid treatment of fractures, burns, cuts, wounds and other injuries. Basic Rescuer CPR Level C is included.
 


Basic Computer Skills for Human Service Workers
  l ^top
This course provides a solid introduction to basic computer skills. Instruction and practice are provided in Microsoft Word, Windows and Internet applications for the workplace.
