Life Skills and Career Program Development Coach Diploma

The second year of this two year Life Skills and Career Development Coach Diploma program focuses on the development of the knowledge and skills relevant to a career development role. The Life Skills and Career Development diploma program provides you with the necessary knowledge
and skills to facilitate and coach all components of life management and career development.

Note 1: Individuals may register in individual courses in year two. To earn the diploma, individuals will need to have the Life Skills Coach Certificate (year one of the diploma program).

by the Career Development Association of Alberta and The Alberta
Association of Professional Life Skills Coaches.

Year Two, Career Development Concentration – 3 semesters

Note: The second year of the diploma program is scheduled to be completed in 11 months; however, individuals may complete the program over a longer period of time and register on a course-by-course basis.

Examine the overall practice of career development with emphasis on understanding the foundational theories and development of eclectic, structural and process approaches to career development.



Introduction to Counselling Principles and Ethics in Career Development

Analyze the basic tenets of counselling with an emphasis on the approach and guidelines for counselling and ethical decision making.
 


Career Counselling and Coaching Techniques
  l ^top
Focus on strategies to deal effectively with obstacles clients face in order to make a successful transition into or back into the workforce.
 


Developing Essential Competencies for Life/Work   l ^top
Build on personal capacity that help clients develop the essential competencies needed to be successful in their work and in their daily life.
 


Work Search Strategies   l ^top
Explore specific skills and information required in successful job search, with an emphasis on résumé development, cover letters and interview techniques.
 


Individual Career Development Planning   l ^top
Explore avenues of self-discovery and personal inventories used to identify transferable skills and their importance to career choice.
 


Program Supervision

Apply the norms and standards that stabilize work groups and gain an understanding of program management functions and the roles and responsibilities of program leadership.
 


Creating a Learning Environment for Adults   l ^top
Examine the role of career development coaches in providing a diverse and flexible set of courses and processes to accommodate individuals and their needs.
 


Resources and Tools for Career Development   l ^top
Develop knowledge and skills in using the resources available to the Career Development Coach including formal/informal assessment instruments, and educational planning tools.
 


Career Development in the Workplace   l ^top
Explore the changing demographics of workers and the resources required to assist employees to make critical career decisions. Develop and assess a professional portfolio.
 


Practicum   l ^top
Prerequisites:
Foundations of Career Development, Career Counselling and Coaching Techniques, Work Search Strategies, Individual Career Planning and Resources and Tools for Career Development

The practicum experience provides you with an opportunity to integrate their learning into practice. The work focus is on the professional development of the practitioner.
 


Introduction to e-Portfolio (if not previously completed)   l ^top
This course introduces you to e-portfolio philosophy and software. Create and maintain an e-portfolio that emphasizes your personal, educational, and career goals.
