 First Nations, Metis and Inuit Community Liaison Certificate Program - Part-Time

This program prepares you to work as a Community Liaison (Home School Liaison) worker within school and community settings. Learn to be a “connector” in building positive relationships between homes and schools. Graduates of the program have the knowledge and skills to work effectively with students, parents, school jurisdictions, and staff. They also work with staff from government and community agencies assisting them to integrate the school into the community and develop trust and communication between Aboriginal homes and schools.

Note 1: Courses in the FNMI Community Liaison Certificate Program are also
available through studies online.

Admission Requirements

Refer to Admissions Procedures for Full-Time Programs on page 8 for further clarification.

• Credit in English 30-1 or 30-2 or equivalent
OR:
• Successful completion of the General Equivalency Development test (GED) with a standard score of 450 in Language Arts:
Reading and Writing
OR:
• Satisfactory results on the BVC Admissions Test

Pre-Program Requirements

The criteria listed below must be completed prior to the first day of classes:

• Current Police Information Check (PIC) with vulnerable sector search

Note: Students who have not submitted their documents by the start of the program will have their Letter of Admission withdrawn.

Graduates of this program may be accepted into:

Enhance and strengthen your skills for success for college and career. Emphasis is on personal management, study skills, and critical thinking.
 

FNMI Community Liaison: Role and Responsibilities    l ^top
Develop knowledge of roles and responsibilities of Community Liaison staff. Learn the skills and attitudes necessary to work professionally and effectively with children, parents and the community within legal and ethical standards and provincial policies and legislation.


Aboriginal History, Identity and Culture    l ^top
Develop an awareness and understanding of diverse Aboriginal, First Nations, Métis and Inuit cultures and cultural practices. Focus is on history, spirituality, and traditions of diverse Aboriginal cultures.


Cross Cultural Communication and Interpersonal Relationships    l ^top
Expand self understanding and awareness of your own behaviour and beliefs as a platform to develop effective interpersonal communication skills in a cross cultural context.


Therapeutic and Professional Communication    l ^top
Prerequisite: Cross Cultural Communication and Interpersonal Relationships or permission of the Department

Learn about the communication skills required when developing and establishing trust with children and families, assessing situations of risk, and providing counselling under the supervision of school/jurisdiction staff.

Human Development Across the Lifespan
   l ^top
Examine developmental theories through the lens of Aboriginal history and culture, recognizing that traditional developmental theories may not take into account Aboriginal culture, or the impact of Aboriginal history on an individual’s development.
 


Introduction to Exceptionalities     l ^top
Explore the history, philosophy, legislation, values, trends, and issues related to exceptional learners. Learn about student inclusion and exceptionalities ranging from mild to severe that may be more prevalent among Aboriginal students and families.


Strategies to Assist with Learner Success    l ^top
Understand the learning processes and application of learning principles in providing instructional support to Aboriginal students.


Fundamentals of Written Communication     l ^top
Develop and practice fundamental writing skills with an emphasis on grammar and basic professional correspondence including letters, memos, and reports.


Computer Applications for Community Liaison Staff
Instruction and practice are provided in Microsoft Word, Windows and internet applications for the workplace. In addition, learn to effectively use assistive technology with students who require support for their learning.


Professional Practices: Leadership and Teamwork    l ^top
Learn leadership skills to influence, shape and imbed values, attitudes, beliefs and behaviours consistent with the needs of Aboriginal children, their families and the school.


Developing Family, School and Community Relationships     l ^top
Learn to work cooperatively and foster positive relationships with significant adults in the child’s environment, namely parents/guardians, school and jurisdiction staff, and community members.


Practicum 1    l ^top
Prerequisite: Role of the FNMI Community Liaison or permission of the Department Begin integrating theory and practice in an educational setting. The main focus of this practicum is supervised work with children, supporting their academic success within the context of the school, the family and the community.


Practicum 2    l ^top
Prerequisite: Practicum 1 or permission of the department
This practicum builds on the knowledge and experience gained in Practicum 1, continuing to focus on supporting children and families, and acting as advocates for Aboriginal children within the school and community.


Introduction to e-Portfolio    l ^top
This course introduces you to e-portfolio philosophy and software. Create and maintain an e-portfolio that emphasizes your personal, educational, and career goals.


Career Skills Evaluation    l ^top
This final course in the college success series helps you assess your employment skills and design a professional development plan as you prepare to transition from college to the workplace.
