NOTE: Welding will continue on
the main campus through August. From time to
time, the equipment used to weld will give off a
faint smoky odour. On the days welding occurs,
signs will be posted throughout the campus
indicating that welding construction is in
progress and asking you to call the Stuart Olson
offices (880-1047) should you get a whiff of
smoke. They will check on the situation
immediately and contact the appropriate
authorities should the situation warrant it.
Here's what's happening this week!
The following will
begin this weekendand
continue
throughout next week:
Significant demolition noise can be expected
throughout the day every weekend
(Saturday & Sunday) for the next 4 months as
the 'inboard' precast panels are removed in
preparation for installation of the steel
structural supports;
Hoarding (temporary barriers) are being
erected on the main floor of the College to
separate the new construction zone on that
floor from the public. This will protect the
public, staff, and students with a clear
separation from publicly occupied spaces and
more dangerous construction areas;
Demolition of the old daycare area can be
seen through the old daycare entrance as the
construction crews prepare this area for two
new classrooms at that location ;
The old Executive Boardroom (Room 115) is
now under demolition in preparation for new
men's and women's washrooms at that
location;
The Security Desk and Coffee Kiosk will be
relocated on the main floor to a temporary
location nearer the elevators to allow
construction of three new classrooms in the
southwest quadrant of the main floor.

Significant demolition noise can be expected
throughout the day every weekend (Saturday &

'inboard' precast panels are removed for
installation of the steel structural

The demolition contractor will continue
making the new openings in the existing
concrete walls adjacent to the 4 shear walls
(beside the stairwells) to insert the steel
drag-ties that will connect the shear walls
to the existing structure - this will occur
on the South side of the building this
weekend;
The mock-up of the new exterior windows has
been installed at the NW corner of Level 5 -
it has been accepted by the architect and
can be seen from the sidewalk on 5th Avenue
or across the street at the YWCA ;
Demolition of the old daycare area on Level
2 will begin this weekend - 2 classrooms
will be built in that area over the next 6
months.
The attached pictures show the following:
a)New
Rooftop Unit #1 which will serve all new
perimeter spaces, including LRS, in all levels
of the Northeast corner of the building;

windows - increased energy efficiency will be
obtained from the new sealed units;

Session is slated for
midJune, 2007 at Noon
in the 5th Floor Lounge on the main campus.

Here's what's happening this week!
The following will
begin this weekendcontinue throughout next week:
Duplicating Services relocated to their new
space on Level 1 of the Main Campus and were
operational on 16 April 2007 (see attached
picture). Work has begun on several
adjacent Ancillary Services offices that can
be seen from the new Shipping/Receiving
desk;
The construction crews are delaying all
noise-producing activities this week in an
effort to give the best environment for the
writing of diploma exams;
The constructors will take advantage of the
weekend of April 28 & 29, 2007 (this
weekend) to produce openings required in
concrete walls for the new ductwork. Sawing
of concrete throughout Saturday and Sunday
will likely cause noise throughout the
College;
Construction activities that cause noise
will occur during normal business hours and
beyond over the Semester Break (April 30 to
May 4, 2007) allowing the construction team
to make up some time lost during GED and
Diploma exams;
Work will progress on the building cooling
system and the shear walls for the next 2
weeks;
A mock-up of the new exterior windows will
be installed at the NW corner of Level 5
during the next 10 days. This will require a
hoarding enclosure that will somewhat
restrict the corridor to approximately 1,100
mm; and,
The man-material hoist is on the way to the
site. It will take several weeks to
install. This exterior 'elevator' will allow the
construction crews and materials to move
vertically reducing reliance on the existing
building elevators.

The next Brown Bag Session is
slated for May 1,
2007 at Noon in the 5th Floor Lounge on the main
campus. Refreshments will be available.

Here's what's happening this week!
The following will begin this weekend continue
throughout next week:
The week of April 20 to April 27 will see
and hear reduced construction activities to
provide the appropriate environment for GED
and other end-of-semester exams.
The week of April 30 to May 7 should see and
hear an increase in the amount of
construction activities as the construction
crews take advantage of the break in the
class schedule to complete areas of work
that have been held back because of the
noise they produce.
The month of May will see the completion of
work on the shear-wall tie backs which are
adjacent to the stairwell. This involves
welding a large structural steel beam into
each of the areas where the plate
reinforcing above the ceilings has already
been installed. Occupants and departments of
the specific dates when this work will occur
will be notified in advance so that concerns
can be addressed.

Here's what's happening this week!
A lot of heavy demolition and noisy work
will take place on the main campus during
the weekend of April 6-8 as Stuart Olson
crews take advantage of the College closure.
The scaffolding over the SW corner of the
plaza will remain in place for approximately
two more weeks as overhead construction
activities continue.
Shear wall tie backs on the 2nd
floor level are scheduled to begin soon and
Stuart Olson crews will be doing
investigation in rooms 217, 237 & 260 and
the food services kitchen over the next
week.

The following will
begin this weekend
continue throughout the week:
April 2007 will see the beginning of one-way
traffic in the loading dock entrance – from 5th
Avenue and exiting on to 6th Avenue.
The most noticeable event for the next 14 weeks
(approximately) will be securing new structural
elements onto the existing building columns and
beams. These elements are required to extend the
current concrete floors out to the new exterior
building face.
Roofing work has produced some unusual odours
that were noticeable outdoors due to wind
direction but were undetectable to the occupants
of the College.

today, Friday, March 23, 2007, to allow the
construction plumbers to begin replacing valves in
many locations throughout the building - mainly in
the ceiling spaces of the male washrooms.
The new loading dock will open on Monday, March 26,
2007 - the old loading dock will be filled in and
new office construction will begin at that location.
April 2007 will see the beginning of one-way traffic
in the loading dock - entrance from 5th Avenue and
exiting onto 6th Avenue;
Roofing is in progress. (Note: As the new roof
system is not a "hot tar" type, we do not anticipate
unusual odours.)
