CAREERS IN HUMAN SERVICES
Early Learning and Child Care (ELCC)
Few careers are more necessary and rewarding than teaching.
While preparing youth for their future, teachers participate in each
child’s development and become a part a young person’s life.
Bow Valley College (BVC) prepares individuals for starting their
career in the education field, offering Early Learning and Child
Care programs.
“Working with children can be an amazing experience,” says Becky
Kelley, BVC’s Program Coordinator for Development, Education, and
Support Studies in the Health and Community Care Department.
“Children can be so open and uninhibited. You can really have fun
with them and enjoy seeing the results.”
A one-year certificate prepares learners to work in childcare
settings with young children, while the two-year diploma qualifies
learners as frontline caregivers or supervisors. Both programs are
offered full time and part time, with some courses available online.
An integrated version is available for English as a Second Language
learners.
Certificate learners will focus on such topics as health and
nutrition, child development through play, creative expression, and
literacy.
The diploma program works on inclusive care and education, diversity
in early childhood settings, leadership in early learning, and
critical issues.
Graduates have opportunities for employment in a variety of
settings, including child-care centres, family day homes, nursery
schools, inclusive child-care programs, kindergartens, and
out-of-school programs.
Early learning and childcare is considered one of the hottest jobs,
among careers requiring a college education, according to a 10-year
employment forecast recently released by Calgary Economic
Development. Almost 3,000 more early childhood educators and
assistants will be needed within the Calgary business district
alone.
Kate Eldstrom is one of the many successful BVC graduates, working
in her chosen field of early childhood education. In fact, 100 per
cent of graduates from this BVC program find work in their field.
She’s now a preschool teacher in Calgary and is grateful for the
education she earned at BVC.
“The instructors at BVC have an understanding of my needs as an
adult learner,” Kate says. “They are so good at assisting the
student with putting theory into practice and relating theory to
real-life situations.
“Having the knowledge I gained from BVC, I was more than prepared to
start working in a preschool teaching position.”
And while she’s in the labour force contributing to the economic
development of Calgary, she’s reaping the rewards of educating
children.
“It is a rewarding career,” Kate says. “It gives back to you each
day as you watch the children grow from learning to hold a pencil to
draw and writing their letters.”
