Flexible learning options spell success for Academic Foundations valedictorian

CALGARY, June 2, 2009Christina Luck needed to find a path toward a new career.

Her plan started with high school upgrading at Bow Valley College (BVC) but, with a one-year-old daughter, Christina required a flexible learning environment.

BVC came through with its fast, focused, flexible education, providing Christina with online and in-class options, as well as student support services and helpful instructors.

On Thursday, June 4, Christina will represent the Academic Foundations department as valedictorian of the Spring 2009 graduating class. The group, including BVC’s first Events Management Diploma graduates, exceeds 400—the College’s largest-ever class.

“Coming back to school as an adult was not an easy thing to do,” says Christina, who will remain at BVC to attain her Office Administration Certificate. “It meant taking on a new role as a student while juggling family, a job, and a personal life. For me, it was about finding the right balance and creating a schedule that fit for me and my family.”

Last Wednesday, Bow Valley College held its Celebrating Student Futures awards Ceremony and Christina received more than $1,000 in scholarships. She earned the Horizon Award, which is valued at $500 and goes to a single mother working to create a better future for her family, and the Improving Lives Legacy Award, which is valued at $750.

Christina will be joined on stage by fellow valedictorians Misty Patterson, Health and Community Care; Kerrie Marin, Business and Industry; and Laura Leroux, Business and Industry. Dr. Kabir Jivraj, a clinical professor at the University of Calgary, Faculty of Medicine, will be guest speaker, and former chair of BVC’s Board of Governors, M. Carol Ryder, will be honoured with the Distinguished Citizen Award.
