Workplace Literacy

Our Workplace Literacy courses will teach you what you need to know to pass various industry certification tests. They will also help you practice your reading, writing, document use, numeracy and basic math, and problem solving skills.


To be successful in these courses, you need to:

  • know how to use internet and email
  • have basic knowledge of numbers, decimals, fractions, and percentages
  • be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers
  • be able to read and understand the main idea in a short newspaper article
  • write a short paragraph about a familiar topic

The minimum recommended CLB score for English language learners who want to register in these courses is Reading: 6, Writing: 5, Listening: 5, and Speaking: 5.

Workplace Documents Literacy

If you want to be productive and more confident in your place of work, the Workplace Documents Literacy course will teach you how to manage different types of documents successfully. You will learn how to read, understand, and write checklists, schedules, charts, tables, graphs, order forms, information sheets, and incident reports. Class activities are practical and relate to real life workplace tasks. You will practice looking for details, learn how to skim for key words, and record information in variety of documents.

There is no additional cost for books and materials. When you complete this course, you will receive a Bow Valley College Certificate of Completion.

Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)

There are hazardous materials in every workplace. Our Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) Literacy course will teach you how to identify the hazards and recognize the hazard symbols. You will also practice reading labels and finding information on Safety Data Sheets (SDS) as well as learning about protective measures.

When you complete this course, you will receive a Bow Valley College Certificate of Completion.  You will also take a Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety online test at an additional cost of $10 to obtain the WHMIS 2015 for Workers certificate.

Construction Safety Literacy

If you want to work in the construction industry CSTS-09 certificate is mandatory. Our Construction Safety Literacy course will teach you all about safety at a construction site. You will learn to recognize possible construction workplace hazards and make a plan to control or prevent them.

When you complete this course, you will receive a Bow Valley College Certificate of Completion in Construction Safety. You will also take the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA) online test to obtain the CSTS-09 certificate. There is no additional cost for books and materials.

Basic Food Safety Literacy

If you are thinking about a career in the food industry, Basic Food Safety Literacy is a course that will teach you important rules for safe food handling. You will learn how to properly receive, store, and prepare food to prevent foodborne illnesses. You will also learn steps for cleaning and sanitizing. Class activities are practical and relate to real life workplace tasks. In addition to 20 hours of class time, you will also spend 3 hours of work practice in a commercial kitchen.

When you complete this course, you will receive a Bow Valley College Certificate of Completion in Basic Food Safety.  You will also take an online test to obtain the Alberta Food Safety Basics certificate.

Note: This course does not meet provincial certification requirements but is a pre-requisite for the Food Safety, Sanitation and Hygiene certification course that does.

Food Safety, Sanitation, and Hygiene Literacy

If you want to learn more about food industry in Alberta and obtain the provincial certification in food safety, the Food Safety, Sanitation, and Hygiene Literacy course will teach you the necessary content. This course meets health laws in Alberta. You will learn about hygiene, microbiology, and food poisoning and you will practice ways to handle food safely. You will also learn ways to prepare, store, cook, and freeze food. In addition to 20 hours of class time, you will also spend 3 hours of practicum in a commercial kitchen.

When you complete this course, you will receive a Bow Valley College Certificate of Completion in Food Safety, Sanitation, and Hygiene.  You will also take the test to obtain the provincial certification in food safety.

Note: There is an additional charge of $75 for materials and the provincial test administered by Alberta Health Services.
