What type of work can I do with an Accounting and Financial Management certificate?

If you enjoy math and like working with numbers, the Accounting and Financial Management certificate may be for you.

With job opportunities in small business, accounting and bookkeeping firms, this certificate will give you the background to calculate, prepare and issue bills; develop inventory reports; reconcile transactions such as accounts receivables/payables; and work in payroll.

Upon graduation, some of the positions that you will be qualified for include Accounting Assistant, Accounts Payable and Receivable Clerk, Administrative Clerk and Payroll/Benefits Assistant.

Besides an Accounting and Financial Management certificate what other skills will I need in order to be successful in this occupation?
The accounting and financial management profession requires you to be highly analytical and very detail oriented, with the ability to concentrate for long periods of time. You must also have good communication skills and be able to work independently.

What is the expected growth in this industry?
The expected growth for entry-level accounting and bookkeeping positions in Alberta is 2.8 to 3.8% each year from 2006 to 2011. It is also expected that 600 NEW positions will be created each year in additions to job openings created by employment turnover and retirement.

How much can I expect to earn with the Accounting and Financial Management Certificate?
Salaries are variable depending on years of experience and the employer's salary scale. Currently Albertans in the Accounting Technician occupational group working part-time or full-time earned from $15,200 to $84,400 a year. The average salary was $38,700 a year. Can I transfer any of these credits towards a Business Administration Diploma?
Yes, upon successful completion of this certificate students can go directly into the second year of the Business Administration diploma.

The program is taught at Bow Valley's downtown Calgary campus. A part-time, online Certificate is also available.
