What can I do with a Human Resources Management Certificate?

Graduates of the Human Resources Management Certificate program are qualified to work in entry-level Human Resources positions in business settings.

The demand for knowledge in the area of human resources (HR) is increasing. This program is for you if you are seeking an entry level HR generalist position, are working in an HR position and looking for specific education related to your job, or are looking to move into the field of HR but do not have any specific education in HR.

In a small to mid-sized company, the owner often looks after HR, with support from an HR Assistant. As the company grows the owner may look for additional staff qualified in the area of human resources to assist with these duties.

Larger organizations hire graduates of the certificate program with the expectation that they will work under the supervision of an HR specialist who will then mentor them ‘on the job'.

Beside a certificate or diploma in Human Resources what other skills will I need to be successful in this profession?
You are required to have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. You should also have an eye for detail, be a problem solver and have strong critical thinking skills.

What is the expected growth in this industry?
The expected growth in Human Resources positions in Alberta is 2.6 to 3.6 from 2006 to 2011. It is also predicted that 40 to 70 NEW positions will be created each year in addition to job openings created by employment turnover.

How much can I expect to earn with a Human Resources Management Certificate?
Salaries vary depending on experience and the employer's salary scale. Currently Albertans in the Personnel and Recruitment Officers occupational group working part-time or full-time earned from $30,200 to $104,700 a year. The average salary was $53,700 a year. (2007 Alberta Wage and Salary Survey, www.alis.gov.ab.ca/occinfo.)

Can I transfer any of these credits to the Business Administration Diploma?
Several of the courses are transferable to the General Diploma.

How long will it take me to complete this program?
If taken full-time, the Human Resources Certificate takes 36 weeks to complete.

Will I need to complete a work experience component?
There is a compulsory four week work experience at the end of the program. The work experience component provides you with the opportunity to put your skills to work in an area of special interest to you. Our work experience officers work with you in order to ensure a suitable work placement.

The program is taught at Bow Valley's downtown Calgary campus.
