Part-Time Language Instruction

Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) Program - Part-time

Learn the English language skills you need for living, working, and studying in Canada.

For eligible applicants, there is no charge for LINC classes. Applicants must be landed immigrants or have refugee status, but cannot be Canadian citizens. Funding for this program is provided by Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

Applicants for the Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program must be referred by the Immigrant Language and Vocational Referral Centre (ILVARC) at 403-262-2656.

LINC Listening and Speaking

Learn conversational skills required for everyday situations. Classes are offered from Canadian Language Benchmark Levels 3 - 6.

Applicants must be referred by ILVARC.

LINC Reading, Writing, and Grammar

Basic ESL

This basic-level course improves your ability to speak, read, and write in English.
Learn to:

  • provide basic personal information in oral and written form
  • respond with short answers to everyday situations
  • follow short written instructions
  • fill out simple forms.

Intermediate ESL

This intermediate-level course improves your ability to speak, read, and write in English. Students in this class should already have knowledge of basic grammar and be able to read basic English print.
Learn to:

  • Initiate and participate effectively in conversations
  • Write one or two paragraphs about personal experiences or future plans
  • Get information from print (short stories, newspapers, charts, schedules, etc.)
  • Fill out application forms

Advanced ESL

This advanced-level course improves your ability to speak, read and write in English. Students in this class should have some confidence in their English abilities but need overall review, practice and refining of existing skills.

Learn to:

  • Participate effectively in conversations using socially appropriate language
  • Write 2-3 paragraphs including an introduction, body and conclusion
  • Identify factual information and infer meaning from print and oral materials
  • Enhance vocabulary and idiomatic comprehension and usage
  • Identify and improve grammatical and pronunciation errors

Grammar and Writing

This intermediate-level course improves your writing and grammar skills.

In this course:

  • learn simple tenses, adjectives, spelling rules, and parts of speech
  • understand the basics of writing good sentences

  • improve accuracy and fluency in your writing
  • build your writing vocabulary

Listening and Speaking

This intermediate to advanced course improves your listening and speaking skills.

In this course:

  • learn and implement listening techniques;
  • practice English for everyday use through group work and role-playing;
  • receive ongoing error correction in grammar, structure, and pronunciation;
  • distinguish between formal and informal English; and,
  • recognize and practice idioms in common use.

Note: The Mon. & Wed. morning classes are high intermediate only.

Pronunciation

This intermediate to advanced level pronunciation course introduces you to strategies and techniques to improve your spoken English. Pronunciation is a computer-assisted course and is offered in two cycles.
There is no prerequisite for either cycle.

In Cycle A, you:

  • compare and contrast the production of vowel sounds; and,
  • compare and contrast the production of consonant sounds

In Cycle B, you:

  • learn correct word and sentence stress;
  • practice intonation and rhythm patterns; and
  • focus on improving listening skills

Cycle A is not a requirement for Cycle B.

This advanced-level ESL class focuses on the language of business. In this course, focus on the following areas of language as they relate to the workplace:

Writing Professionally

Learn to improve your ability to write English confidently and appropriately in the workplace. This course is intended for advanced English language learners whose skills allow for employability, but who still feel that their language skills do not allow them to function to  the best of their abilities at work and socially. The course is intended to be intensive and fast-paced. In this course you:

  • Initiate and participate effectively in formal and informal written correspondence
  • Write using correct grammar and syntax
  • Write in a concise manner
  • Write on a topic relative to field of employment

Grammar

Learn where you are making grammatical mistakes and apply the rules of grammar to communicate effectively. It is recommended you complete the intermediate level before registering for the advanced level. There is an assessment at the first class.

In the intermediate level learn:

Academic Writing

This advanced level class aims to provide learners with the knowledge and tools to be effective academic writers. Students taking this class will be challenged to produce strong papragraphs and/or essays. Feedback will be given to learners on strategies for improving their acadenic writing skills so that they may succeed when taking an academic writing test or being accepted into post-secondary environment.

In this course you will practice:

  • writing on topic
  • organizing and linking ideas
  • providing supporting details and examples
  • editing to ensure correct spelling, punctuation and grammar
  • developing and incorporating appropriate vocabulary usage

IELTS Preparation

This course prepares participants to take the Academic format of the IELTS test. The Academic format tests a person's ability to study in English at an undergraduate or postgraduate level and can be used to satisfy the English Language Proficiency requirements at many institutions.

In this course you:

  • Practice each component of the IELTS test - speaking, listening, academic reading and academic writing
  • Practice completing test sections within the time restrictions set by IELTS
  • Have the opportunity to receive feedback from a BVC instructor on performance as well as tips on how to improve your IELTS score

  • Practice completing test sections within the time restrictions set by IELTS
  • Have the opportunity to receive feedback from a BVC instructor on performance as well as tips on how to improve your IELTS score
