It’s easy to turn prior learning into a
certificate at Bow Valley College. Learners who wish to receive
recognition and accreditation for lifelong learning can request an
assessment of their prior learning. Bow Valley College’s Prior
Learning Assessment process uses a variety of approaches and methods
to help learners identify and demonstrate their prior learning. This
learning may have been acquired through experience in the workplace,
independent study and life experiences that have not been recognized
through the traditional means of obtaining credit. The Prior Learning
Assessment uses a variety of methods to help you identify and
demonstrate your prior learning.
Standard methods of assessment include:
• Course challenge exams
• QWIZ testing
• MOUS exams (Microsoft Office User Specialist)
• Written/oral exams
• Interviews
• Skill demonstrations
• Portfolio presentations
Any combination of the above methods of assessment will be tailored to
specific courses. The standards applied to Prior Learning Assessments
are the same as those applied to course assessments.
Fees
The fee for conducting a Prior Learning Assessment is
determined by the appropriate department. The fee will range from $100
to a maximum of the course tuition. This fee is established by the
academic department prior to the commencement of the Prior Learning
Assessment.
Certification
Credits received through Prior Learning Assessment can be
applied to Bow Valley College certificates. You can receive up to a
maximum of 75% of program credits toward a Bow Valley College
certificate through Prior Learning Assessments. The balance of the
credits must be attained through residency (courses that you register
for through the Registrar’s Office). This residency requirement may
vary depending on the program and department.
