Across Canada, employers, educators, labour organizations and
governments are working together to ensure that Canadians have the
essential skills needed for higher skill, higher pay jobs. According
to Statistics Canada, 47 per cent of Canadian workers do not possess
adequate skills for workplace safety and productivity.
TOWES (Test of Workplace Essential Skills)
is an effective assessment
that accurately measures three essential skills needed for safe and
productive employment: Reading Text, Document Use, and Numeracy. TOWES
is significantly different from other skills assessments as test
takers must assume the role of a worker and use information imbedded
in authentic documents to solve real problems.
By Using TOWES:
• Employers can identify skill gaps and provide focused training to
prepare workers for a wide range of jobs. Investing in TOWES will
improve an organization’s bottom line.
• Employees, students, and job seekers can use TOWES to assess present
skills and compare them to the requirements of over 200 jobs listed in
the National Occupational Classification. The identification and
development of essential skills enables individuals to make more
informed career and education decisions, and gain access to higher
paying jobs.
• Educators and trainers can pinpoint areas of strength and weakness
and develop focused intervention strategies.
