About

Elizabeth Macgillivray is a disability rights advocate and educator with over 20 years of experience supporting persons with disabilities across the lifespan. With a Developmental Services Worker Diploma, Bachelor of Community Rehabilitation & Disability Studies, Master of Science in Human and Social Services, and Addiction Studies Certificate, Macgillivray brings comprehensive expertise grounded in person-centered, family-centered, rights-based, and holistic approaches to disability support. Her career spans direct work with persons with disabilities, Education Assistant roles, community support, in-home support for children with autism, and government case work with Family Support for Children with Disabilities in Alberta. Her pivotal practicum at Rideau Regional—during Ontario's institutional closure phase—profoundly shaped her understanding of segregation's devastating impact and her commitment to community inclusion. A capstone project creating interprofessional education curricula at BVC reflects her belief in collaborative, integrated service approaches. Currently leading the redesign of the Disability Studies program into Competency Based Education, Macgillivray champions the social model of disability and accessibility. She has served on Calgary's Accessibility Committee and is active with the Calgary Region Service Provider network and Canadian Accessibility Network, where she co-authored the Language Guide for disability-related terminology. A passionate athlete—having completed two 50km ultra marathons and a 3-day 84km trail race—Macgillivray brings lived experience of disability alongside her professional expertise. She advocates powerfully for the motto "Nothing About Us Without Us," celebrating the talents of persons with disabilities and promoting inclusive, accessible communities.
