About

Marcus Jannessen is a cross-cultural psychology educator and mental health advocate with lived expertise in neurodiversity. Born and raised in Sweden, Jannessen completed his BSc and MSc in Psychology, with his master's thesis focusing on how police uniforms affect self-perception and social perception—research he conducted at Växjö University (now Linneus University). Before joining Bow Valley College in 2011, he taught at the Police Officer Program at Vaxjo University, where he researched the psychological differences between civilian and uniformed police training students. He has also taught part-time at Mount Royal University and brings extensive international perspective to his teaching of introductory psychology courses. Beyond classroom instruction, Jannessen is a registered ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) trainer and safeTALK facilitator, serving as a mental health awareness educator across the college and in the broader community. He is deeply passionate about neurodiversity—as a clinically diagnosed ADHDer and someone who recognizes autistic traits without formal diagnosis, he brings personal understanding to discussions of masking, hyperfocus, hypervigilance, and the ongoing struggle for identity and belonging that many neurodivergent individuals experience. His research interests center on social psychology, the psychology of clothing and uniform effects, and neurodiversity in organizational contexts. As a man in the demographic most at risk of suicide, Jannessen takes his mental health advocacy role seriously. Beyond his professional work, he embodies lifelong learning, maintaining deep curiosity and a unique personal philosophy— he shares his home with four domestic rabbits he rescued after finding them left outside in winter.
