Meet our 2026 Award Recipients

Bow Valley College is proud to introduce the inaugural recipients of the Alumni Awards: Liz Nandee, Shona Reilly and Karamjeet Karam. These graduates reflect exceptional innovation, leadership and service across a wide range of fields, demonstrating how a Bow Valley College education can launch, advance and evolve careers, empowering graduates to make meaningful contributions within their industries and communities.

About

The founder of Basic Black Designs Inc., Liz Nandee is an internationally sought‑after set designer whose work has supported high‑profile figures including Oprah Winfrey, Michelle and Barack Obama, Ellen DeGeneres and Hillary Clinton. Her designs have appeared in more than 50 magazines worldwide. Based in Calgary, Liz is intentional about incorporating local products and showcasing the city’s artisans in her designs. Known for her perseverance and creative leadership, Liz built her career through determination and an ability to create spaces that reflect the speaker’s personality and also prioritize their comfort. Her time at Bow Valley College helped her develop confidence in her creative voice and laid the foundation for a purpose‑driven entrepreneurial career. Liz also gives back through volunteer work supporting women, youth and vulnerable populations in Calgary.

About

As director of trade at Calgary Economic Development, Shona Reilly has played a key role in supporting Alberta businesses expand globally, helping hundreds of companies generate more than $100 million in trade revenue over the past five years. She led the launch and expansion of the Trade Accelerator Program across Alberta and played a key role in securing a $2.6‑million grant to support that work. Beyond her professional role, Shona has served for over a decade in the Canadian Armed Forces Naval Reserves, mentoring youth and earning the Canadian Forces’ Decoration for exemplary service. Bow Valley College was the catalyst for Shona’s career. The College’s focus on work‑integrated learning equipped her with tangible skills and industry connections, preparing her to enter the workforce with confidence upon graduation.

Karamjeet Karam

About

Karamjeet Karam is an early‑career leader whose path reflects determination, professionalism and a strong commitment to community service. While completing her Justice Studies Diploma at Bow Valley College, she balanced full‑time studies with leadership roles in security and an internship with the RCMP, gaining experience in high‑pressure, real‑world environments. Following graduation, Karamjeet served as a Shelter Shift Supervisor at Calgary Alpha House, supporting individuals experiencing homelessness, addiction and mental health challenges through trauma‑informed approaches learned through her education. In 2025, she earned a formal offer from the Regina Police Service, completed police training later that year, and now serves as a police officer. Karamjeet credits Bow Valley College with building the confidence, judgment and values that guide her work today.

This award recognizes recent graduates within 10 years of graduation (2015-2025), who are achieving early career success and momentum. These graduates exemplify leadership, innovation, and active community involvement, demonstrating the College’s immediate impact in careers and communities.

Nominators will be asked to answer the following questions:

  • How has the nominee demonstrated early career achievement or innovation in their field?
  • How has the nominee demonstrated professional impact or contribution to their community?

This award honours alumni with enduring career achievements and a proven record of community leadership. These graduates combine career excellence with community leadership, embodying the College’s values of professional and community impact.

Nominators will be asked to answer the following questions:

  • What are the nominee’s most meaningful achievements or contributions in their field?
  • How has the nominee demonstrated strong leadership or mentorship, or contributed to their community?
  • What long-term difference has this nominee made in their workplace, industry, or community?

Nomination Eligibility

  • Faculty and staff are eligible if they are Bow Valley College alumni; however, their contributions should be above and beyond those expected in their normal duties.
  • Alumni currently holding public office are not eligible for nomination.
  • Anonymous and self-nominations will not be accepted.
  • An eligible candidate will be automatically reconsidered for two additional years, provided their eligibility status remains unchanged.
  • Recipients selected to receive an award must attend the presentation ceremony, except in rare circumstances (posthumous award, unexpected illness or emergency). If the candidate is unable to attend due to these circumstances, they may designate another to receive the award on their behalf.
  • Nominees must have earned a certificate or diploma from Bow Valley College.
  • Current members of the Bow Valley College Alumni Awards Selection Committee are not eligible.
