You’ve submitted your application - what’s next?

Check your Virtual Application System (VAS)

Check your account often for updates. You may need to send transcripts or pay fees. Incomplete applications can’t be reviewed.

Applying for permits

If your program is over 6 months, you need a study permit. If it includes a practicum, you also need a co-op work permit. Apply early for both, as processing can take time.

Entering Canada: Visa or eTA

Depending on your country of citizenship, you may need a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to enter Canada. Be sure to check what’s required for you.

Apply for your study permit

If your program is longer than 6 months, you must have a study permit.
Most students need to apply from outside of Canada. Before you apply:

  • Check how long the application process takes
  • Plan for delays, mail times, or visa office backlogs

Bow Valley College is a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).

Our DLI number is O19273769422 (the first character is the letter “O”).

To apply, you need to include:

  • DLI number
  • Your Letter of Acceptance
  • Your PAL (provincial attestation letter)

When you get your Study Permit Approval Letter, upload it to VAS.

Changing schools in Canada?

If you already have a study permit and are changing schools, you must:

  1. Tell Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)
  2. Apply to extend your study permit
Co-op Work Permit (for work placements)

Some programs include work experience or practicum.  If this is part of your program, you need a co-op work permit. Your Letter of Acceptance will say if you need this. It’s a good idea to apply for your co-op permit at the same time as your study permit.

Do you need a visa or eTA?

Many students need a visa or an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) to enter Canada.
Check online to see what you need based on your country of citizenship.
