Transfer Credit

Have you completed Post-Secondary Education?

Transfer Credit is an assessment that recognizes completed coursework taken from another accredited post-secondary institution based on the learning outcomes of the course. Applying for transfer credit can reduce your course load in your program.

What are the eligibility requirements? >

Steps for requesting Transfer Credit

Step 1: When to apply.

You will have the opportunity to apply for Transfer Credit once you are accepted into your program. We recommend that you begin your application as soon as you receive your acceptance letter.

Step 2: Compare your completed courses with courses in your program.

Transfer credit is evaluated on course-to-course equivalency. This means that the course you completed at your previous accredited post-secondary institution must be equivalent to at least 80% of the learning outcomes of the course you are requesting at Bow Valley College within your career program.

In some cases, two courses may be requested towards one course if the learning outcomes are distributed amongst the two courses.

Check Transfer Alberta to verify if a previous transferability decision on your course or program already exists with Bow Valley College. If the Transfer Alberta search results don't show a transfer decision, you can still apply.

Course time limitation is the duration of time imposed by the Academic Department for granting credit for courses completed within a specific time frame. Each course has specific time limitations established. If you complete a course outside of these time limitations the course will no longer be eligible for transfer credit.

Please note: Be aware that all types of transfer can affect your full-time status. It is your responsibility to be aware of how this will affect your studies.

Step 3: Have your official transcripts and detailed course outlines ready.

Official transcripts must be submitted and sent directly to Bow Valley College by your post-secondary institution. Official transcripts must show final grades in every subject and term grade point average (GPA).

For credentials not in English, we need certified English translations of all your documents including attested (authenticated) post-secondary transcripts before we can proceed with your transfer credit request.

Submit your comprehensive course outline/syllabus (PDF only) for each course you are requesting. It should include the following:

Please note: If you have already submitted an official transcript at the point of admission you will not be required to resubmit them unless you have courses you are currently in progress of taking.

Step 4: Submit a transfer credit request form.

Once you have everything ready and received your acceptance into your career program you will need to submit a Transfer Credit request form available through BVC Central. The Transfer Credit & PLAR team will go through your request along with all your supporting documents and determine eligibility.

We focus on transfer credit requests for the upcoming term. If your term is not listed on the request form, please check back after the add/drop deadline.

If your requested courses are granted transfer credit you will receive a grade of “TC” on your Bow Valley College transcript.
