Bow Valley College Launches Registered Psychiatric Nurse Diploma Program

Bow Valley College Launches Registered Psychiatric Nurse Diploma Program

February 19, 2026

February 19, 2026 (Calgary, AB) – Bow Valley College has officially received endorsement from the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta (CRPNA) and approval from Alberta’s Ministry of Advanced Education to develop and deliver a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) bridging program. The program, offered for the first time in Alberta in a competency-based education (CBE) format, is now open for applications. The first cohort is expected to begin in fall 2026.

The Psychiatric Nurse Diploma pathway will enable eligible LPNs with considerable clinical experience to build on their existing qualifications and earn dual designation as both LPNs and RPNs. The curriculum is designed to develop advanced competencies in mental health care, equipping graduates to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate evidence-based care for individuals experiencing a spectrum of psychiatric conditions and emotional disorders, using a holistic, patient-centred approach under the Health Care Centre of Excellence.

The launch comes at a critical moment for Alberta’s healthcare sector which has seen employment grow by 21,000 workers over the past three years and is projected to represent $49 billion in economic activity by 2050. Registered Psychiatric Nurses play a vital role within Alberta Health Services and across the province’s mental health system, providing specialized care that addresses a growing need for accessible psychiatric services.

“This program is a landmark achievement for Bow Valley College and for psychiatric nursing education in Alberta. By designing this pathway in a competency-based format, we are ensuring that experienced LPNs can advance their careers in a way that is rigorous, flexible, and directly responsive to the needs of the healthcare system. We are incredibly proud of what this represents — not only for our students, but for the patients and communities they will serve.”

—  Dr. Taren Taylor, Dean, School of Health and Wellness, Bow Valley College

Delivering this program in a competency-based format is a significant distinction. Rather than progressing on a fixed timeline, students advance upon demonstrating mastery of defined skills and knowledge areas — an approach that recognizes the real-world expertise LPNs bring to the classroom and supports more individualized, effective learning. LPNs will gain the designation much faster, without sacrificing quality.

Bow Valley College acknowledges the collaborative effort required to bring this program to life. The CRPNA was a supportive partner throughout the regulatory approval process and the program is now accepting applications.
