English for Academic Purposes

This full-time program is for English language learners who plan to pursue post-secondary studies in Canada. The program provides you with the strategies and English language skills needed to succeed in academic courses at Canadian post-secondary institutions.

This program includes the following activities:

  • interacting and working with others in post-secondary classes
  • using technology to learn
  • setting school and/or career goals
  • learning cross-cultural communication skills

There are four levels to this program. You will write the EAP placement test at Bow Valley College to determine your placement level. We will send you information about testing after you apply.



Upon successful completion of EAP, you will meet the English language requirements for most career programs at Bow Valley College or SAIT.*
Completion of Academic English 2 will be accepted in place of English 30 for most programs at Bow Valley College:

  • A minimum grade of "B" is required for Interdisciplinary Therapy Assistant Diploma, Practical Nurse Diploma, and Pharmacy Technician Diploma
  • A minimum grade of "B-" is required for all other programs that require English 30

To register in an Open Studies course, find the course in the list below and click on the course code. Select the offering of the course that you would like to take, add it to the cart, proceed to checkout, and pay with a credit card.
Registration for all courses opens at 9:00 A.M. Calgary time.

Program availability and start dates are subject to change. Admission is based on first applied, first qualified.

Admission requirements

  • Successful completion of the EAP entrance test (You will receive test details after you apply)
  • A minimum of high school completion in student’s home country is recommended
  • Minimum language test or course scores:
    • IELTS Academic: 4.0
    • Duolingo: 65
    • *Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) test results or course-assigned CLBs: 5/5/5/4 (4 in any strand)

*Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) tests are available at C-LARC.

Test results are valid for two (2) years from the test date. Results that expire before the program start date cannot be accepted. Official results must be submitted.
