Complete or upgrade the courses you need for work or post-secondary admission.  We offer pathways through adult basic education, high school equivalency and official Alberta Education high school courses to help you reach your goals as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Funding for Upgrading

Academic Upgrading in the School of Foundational Learning provides pathways to further education and employment.

The Government of Alberta offers financial assistance programs for low-income Albertans to help with education and living costs.  Students enrolled in Academic Upgrading may qualify for financial support.  Learn more about the Foundational Learning Assistance Program.

Funding is available for the2026 Winter term.

Interested in funding? The first step is to apply to the Upgrading program.  Students must be admitted into the program to request funding.  Funding is processed on a first-come, first-served basis.  Due to high demand, we recommend students apply as soon as possible.  Applications for Upgrading for the 2026 Winter term open on September 24, 2025.

Delivery Modes

Blended Asynchronous (BA)

  • No scheduled class times.
  • Lessons, activities, videos, and readings are posted in D2L and/or Teams (our online learning platform).
  • Students are expected to complete assigned work and make consistent progress in their courses each week.
  • Assessments are supervised and scheduled either on campus or with an approved off-site proctor. 
  • Expect up to 4 in-person assessments per term, plus a final exam (if applicable).
Blended Asynchronous & Synchronous (BAS)

  • At least three scheduled online classes per week, plus independent study. 
  • Attendance at scheduled sessions is required.
  • Assessments are supervised and scheduled either on campus or with an approved off-site proctor. Expect up to 4 in-person assessments per term, plus a final exam (if applicable)
Blended Synchronous (BS)

  • Classes scheduled five days a week: Monday to Thursday, on campus, Friday will be online.
  • Attendance is required. Assessments are written during class time.
Hyflex (HF)

  • Classes are scheduled five days a week (both online and on campus). 
  • You can choose how to participate; attend classes online, on campus, or watch recorded classes.
  • Assessments are supervised and scheduled either on campus or with an approved off-site proctor.
  • Expect up to 4 in-person assessments per term, plus a final exam (if applicable).

Minimum Technology Requirements

All students must have regular access to technology. A desktop computer or laptop is with the following capabilities is:

  • Have reliable internet access.
  • Have a camera and microphone.
  • Support MS Teams and Desire to Learn (D2L)
  • Allow access to email through a myBVC account.
  • Allow access to PDF and Word documents.
  • Have a keyboard to create text documents of 500 words or more.

Admission requirements

  • Transcripts for high school courses successfully completed in Canada within the last 7 years; or
  • A high school level on the Bow Valley College Admission and Placement Test
