The answer was beautiful chaos.
Produced in partnership with the National Music Centre, YYCSoundscapes: In Tune with Motion was a special one-time event held as part of Design Week Calgary’s official programing. The annual festival’s theme this year was “In Tune” calling on participants to be aware of the rhythms of the city’s sounds, spaces and people.
The special interactive event was inside Bow Valley College’s advanced digital production facility where participants were able to interact with a city scene while the band created a baseline of aural ambience, a steady vibe that represented home.
“We have access to motion capture technology and massive soundstage with volume wool. So we wanted to take that virtual production and motion capture technology into that theme of being in tune,” said Katlyn Sproule, Community Engagement Lead at Bow Valley College.
Using the college’s Vicon Valkyrie motion capture system – considered the gold standard in the film and gaming industry – the team mapped out sounds of the city that could be activated by participants with a drumstick, all in real time.
“I think it’s a great opportunity to learn a little bit about the technology, plus having fun and jamming with jazz,” said Nikolas Florez, virtual production studio specialist.
The live performance was arranged by the National Music Centre, bringing in three of Calgary’s most experienced jazz musicians: Chris Taucher, pianist with Calgary Jazz Orchestra; Jeff Gammon on bass, a recipient of the Linton Garner and MusiCounts scholarships; Afo Fapujuwo on drums, with appearances that include Montreal Jazz Festival and Osheaga.
The musicians jammed with about 20 participants, with the added pressure of local news recording the event.
The collection of technology at the heart of Bow Valley College’s Production Hub has potential applications beyond traditional film production and can be booked by the public for private productions and creative projects.
